Simple setup guide

Set up Google Analytics 4

See what visitors do on your website, where they come from and which pages they use.

Before you start: A Google account and permission to edit your website’s tracking settings. Google Analytics has a free version.

Already using Google Analytics 4?

Do not create a second property or install a second tag. If your existing GA4 property already receives visits, check your Google account has access and skip to step 5.

  1. Create your Analytics property

Open Google Analytics. Create an account if you do not have one, then create a Google Analytics 4 property for your website. Choose the reporting time zone and currency that match your business.

    Open Google Analytics
  2. Add your website

Choose Web when asked where to collect data. Enter your website address and a stream name. Your web stream will have a Measurement ID starting with G-. You can find it later under Admin → Data streams.

  3. Install the website tag

Open your web stream’s tag installation instructions. If your website builder has a Google Analytics setting, follow its instructions to add your Measurement ID. Otherwise use Google Tag Manager or ask your website developer to install the Google tag. Use one installation method, not multiple.

  4. Check that visits arrive

Visit your website, then open the Realtime report in Analytics. Allow a few minutes for your visit to appear. Consent settings, blockers or traffic filters may prevent your own visit from showing. Configure tracking and consent to meet your visitors’ privacy requirements.

  5. Connect it to Plotline

In Plotline, open Connections and click Connect Google. Use the account that can see your GA4 property and allow Analytics access. If already connected, use Edit Access if needed, then Setup Google Data. Select your GA4 property and click Import and start asking.

What to expect

Standard Analytics reports can take 24 to 48 hours to process. A new tag collects future visits, not visits from before it was installed. Realtime activity does not mean daily reports are ready yet.

Connect in Plotline

Sign in or create a Plotline account if prompted. Plotline only reads your Google data.

Need a hand?

My GA4 property is not listed

An Analytics administrator can add the Google account shown in Plotline under Admin → Property access management. Viewer access is sufficient for reporting. Return to Plotline and run Setup Google Data again.

There are no visits or conversions

Check that your tag is published on the live website and uses the correct G- Measurement ID. Sales and leads need the relevant events configured; installing Analytics alone does not automatically track every business outcome.
